    Description

[WWII, OCCUPIED FRANCE, POST WAR FRANCE]
On offer here is an ORIGINAL WWII (1944) DIJON REGION BROADSIDE / POSTER ANNOUNCING A LIBERATION CELEBRATION / MEMORIAL JUST 6 WEEKS AFTER THE REGION WAS LIBERATED FROM THE OCCUPYING GERMAN FORCES.
The broadside measures 24.5 in wide x 39 in tall and is printed on tan paper. There is a red, white & blue corner in the upper left signifying the return of the French Republic. The piece was folded in eighths and has fold creases. There are some minor edge tears as shown. The piece is otherwise complete and ready for display and conversation.
This piece came from a group of WWII era material put together by an academic for a museum retrospective on war era posters in the 1980's. This was among the pieces in the retrospective exhibition.
The German Army left the Dijon area on September 11th, 1944 as the Allied forces entered the area following the D-Day invasions in June. Paris was liberated on August 25th and it took another 2 weeks for the German forces to leave the Dijon area. After the Germans left, order was restored, government leaders were back in place and they decided to have this ceremony for the populace to recognize liberation on the local level.
An interesting and novel conversation piece which is quite displayable and a valuable teaching tool for those interested in WWII, France or Germany.
The French text of the broadside:

Ni groupes constitues , ni pancartes, ni discours, des fleurs pour le Cenotaphe. Il faut que ce cortege soit le plus grand qu'on ait jamais vu a Dijon.

Pour permettre la dispersion et le retour sans confusion, la sortie aura lieu uniquement par une porte nouvelle qui sera ouverte dans le mur du cimetiere sur le chemin es Pejoces.
