It was released in a Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. Like the other coins in the set, this piece bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.
Captivating Devils Island Design by Richard Masters
This coin shares a common obverse with other America the Beautiful Proof Quarters. John Flanagan's left-side portrait of President George Washington, which has appeared on American quarters since 1932, is at the center. The effigy is joined by several inscriptions, including "QUARTER DOLLAR" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
Richard Masters designed and Renata Gordon sculpted the reverse design, which depicts a kayaker paddling by the sea caves on Devils Island. Trees on top of the caves combine with a lighthouse in the distance to make for a stunning backdrop. The image is encircled by a rim frame on which there are four inscriptions, including "APOSTLE ISLANDS" and "WISCONSIN."

This coin is in almost perfect condition as seen by the naked eye according to the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), who awarded it their second highest grade, Proof 69. Its Ultra Cameo designation further indicates that it bears especially sharp contrasts between frosted devices and mirrored fields, while its Early Releases certification means that NGC received it not more than thirty days after the coin was first released from the mint. NGC has provided this information on a label that features one of San Francisco's famous trolley cars.
