This is a very historic photo, as it shows the amazing DKW two stroke three cylinder racer in full action. The German nickname for this astonishing machine was the “Wunderwaffe aus
Ingolstadt
”, a.k.a. the wonder weapon from
Ingolstadt
, the town where D.K.W. was housed at that time.
Cecil Sandford would finish 5th in the 350cc world championship that year on the photographed machine. In 1956 he would also finish 13th in the 125 world championship on a Mondial. He was an excellent roadracer with a long and impressive career. He won the 125cc world championship on a M.V. Agusta in 1952, and the 250cc world championship in 1957 on a Mondial.
