A superb and rare photo of the magnificent 1977 250cc World Champion
Mario Lega
in action with the magnificent
Ducati 900 NCR
during the grueling heavy
24 Hours of Montjuich
endurance race of
1979
.
Mario Lega teamed up for the race with
Vanes Francini
. Unfortunately they were forced to retire after 291 laps because of a crash. Benjamin Grau and Salvador Canellas,
teammates
of Lega and Francini, and the two Montjuich experts of Ducati, finished
3RD
with a
similar Ducati 900 NCR
!
Mario Lega
, born in 1949, won the 250cc World Campionship in 1977 as a member of the Morbidelli factory racing team. His active racing career spanned the era between 1973 and 1978. He rode a total of 27 Grand Prix races. His last Grand Prix win was the 1977 250cc Yugoslavian Grand Prix.
Lega is seen riding a factory-NCR
Ducati 900 NCR
. The engine was a modified Ducati 900SS unit and delivered a power output of approximately 110bhp at 8,500 r.p.m. This was enough to propel the bike to a top speed of
156 mph
(
251 km/h
).
Without doubt the Ducati NCR was one of the best machines competing in the 1970s endurance racing scene.
In the early 1970’s, long distance racing was extremely popular in
Europe
. These events were responsible for the quick gaining popularity of the heavier sports motorcycle, like the Ducati 750 SS, the Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, The Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans and the Benelli 650 Tornado, the BMW R 90 S Daytona and the Laverda SFC 750; but also the Japanese sports motorcycles like the Kawasaki 350, 500 and 750 triples, but also heavy four strokes like the Honda CB 750 Four. Riders that would make world fame, like Franco Uncini and Marco Lucchinelli, all participated in these races before they made the steps to the Grand Prix World Championship racing scene. The foundation for today’s Superbike racing series was laid in the 1980’s, when the TT Formula 1 and TT Formula 2 racing classes became very popular.
Montjuic
, alternatively spelled
Montjuïc
or
Montjuich
, is a hill located in the Spanish city op
Barcelona
,
Spain
. The roads in the slopes facing the city formed once the famous Montjuic circuit, where for decades motorcycle and car races were being organized. For decades the 24 Hours of
Barcelona
races were ridden at Montjuic, and also the Spanish Grand Prix races. On four occasions Formula One car races were organized on the Montjuic circuit.
