Harley-Davidson 61 c.i. (1,000 cc) Sixty-One FS Bigtwin

This interesting image shows a 1921 H-D Sixty-one FS Bigtwin model, shortly after it was uncrated and build up at the
Italian Harley-Davidson importer
in 1921. In
Europe
the big Harley models were very popular in racing and record events. There were not many European motorcycle companies that build bikes with the 1,000cc (61 ci) capacity, so the big American bikes were popular amongst many professional and amateur racers and speed record breakers.
After being fully assembled from the crate the Harley Sixty-One on the photo was photographed for publicity purposes (see photo…). Then it was stripped of most of its road going gear, after which it was used extensively in racing throughout
Italy
and scored some impressive wins.
The Sixty-One on the photo featured a 61 c.i. (1,000 cc) F-head V-twin engine. The inlet valve was constructed as an overhead valve, the exhaust valve was a side valve. This so called i.o.e. (inlet over exhaust) design worked incredibly well for H-D and marked the end of the previous pocket-valve era for HD.
This is a very nice and very rare photo that reflects a wonderful era of Harley ‘s motorcycle history in a wonderful way. This is your rare chance to own this photo, therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 8" x 12" (ca. 20 x 30 cm). It makes it perfectly suitable for framing!
