    Description

Up for auction is a rare HD press photo, of the Harley-Davidson XLH 883 Hugger Sportster.
    In 2001 Harley-Davidson launched a road-going tribute to its all-conquering XR750 dirt track race bike: the Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883R.
On sale in August 2001, the bike would be available for one year only. The Harley-Davidson XR750 was the HD’s most successful competition bike ever. The H-D XL 883R, based on the popular Sportster 883, has been specifically designed and engineered to replicate the famous dirt track racer. The race-inspired model features a dirt track race theme livery (in Harley-Davidson’s famous performance orange with black and white decals); an eye-catching chrome two-into-one exhaust system; wide XR750 dirt track handlebars; dual front disc brakes; a specially designed fastback styled seat; a black finish on the engine, oil tank, air cleaner cover and ignition switch cover; and short stem black mirrors. All combine to create a high profile motorcycle with great looks and a unique competition style, set to be extremely popular with race enthusiasts and style aficionados alike.
The new Sportster did justice to Harley ’s racing history. After all, the Company has a long history in motorsport. In fact, in 1921 Harley-Davidson became the first vehicle to win a race with an average speed of more than
    100 mph
. The XR750 first raced in the
    United States
national series in 1972. It was originally based on the Sportster when a new all-alloy 750cc racer was conceived to replace the successful KR750. The bike has achieved phenomenal success on the
    US
oval dirt track race circuit including three successive national victories from 1976 to 1978 for Jay Springsteen and five in a row for Scott Parker from 1994 to 1998. The XR750 was made even more famous by Evel Knievel. Knievel not only raced the bikes, it was an XR750 that he used for most of his spectacular record breaking jumps.
