    Description

All I can say about this recent estate find is WOW!  I spent a day helping clean a house in preparation for an estate sale and I found this entire collection stashed away in a couple boxes underneath the house.  Who KNOWS when this stuff was last looked at.  This APPEARS to be a father and son.  I've tried doing research to see if they are Father/Son but with no avail and I don't have access to the ancestry website and am not going to pay for a subscription to find out.  But I think it is safe to assume it is a Father/Son grouping.  Father served in WWI and attended college as an AVID sports star and very involved in many groups at college, who then went off to serve in WWI.  Then, what appears to be his son, also served in the Army in what appears to be around 1951.  I don't know if he served in WWII or not.  The reason I believe they were Father and Son is because they BOTH have the same name.  The son doesn't have "Jr." after his name but I think it's safe to assume they are fatter and son.  Many of these items are NAMED and the man has a very distinguishable face.
There are MANY items of great value here individually but I choose to keep this amazing group together to continue it's awesome history and legacy.
Here is what is included in this listing:
    WWI items: (father)
"The Sioux" yearbook from 1917.  From Sioux Falls College, South Dakota.  This yearbook is in very nice condition considering it being 104 years old.  There are MANY photos of Fred Hanson in this yearbook.  He was VERY involved in sports and various clubs including:
    Class of 1918 portrait
    Y.M.C.A. Cabinet
President of the Student Association Board
    Philomathian Literacy Society
    Varsity Club
    Captain of the Football Team
    Varsity Boy's Basket Ball Team
The "Sioux Board" as Athletic Editor
RARE WWI history book titled:  "They're From Kansas, The History of the 353rd Infantry" A yearbook of the AEF U.S. National Army for the 353rd Infantry, 89th Infantry Division.  Sept. 5, 1917.  Published in 1921.  His name is listed on page 272 under the Company A roster
RARE Leather-bound WWI yearbook titled, "In The World War 1917 1918 1919 Minnehaha County, South Dakota".  His portrait is on page 70, name on page 71.  Along with a handwritten note on a Christmas card to his son from maybe his sister, explaining that their dad's photo is in the album
4 (four) 8x10" photographs of a variety of organizations he was involved in during college.  Including some cool photos of:
the college football team he was in, dated 1915
What looks like to be the literary team
2 photos of the tennis team he was on
1 (one) 8x10" cabinet card photograph of Fred Hansen sitting at a desk with a large city of Los Angeles map behind him
2 (Two) panoramic "yard longs" photos of the 353rd Infantry, Company A.
The unframed panoramic photograph was taken shortly after their return back to the United States after WWI.  It states the dates of which Company A was deployed.  It states "Sailed to France June 4th, 1918, returned to the U.S. May 22, 1919".  Photo measures 32" x 8"
The framed panoramic photo is of the 353rd Infantry, Company A.  Taken in Kansas City.  Likely pre-deployment to France.  Overall frame measures 33" x 9 1/2"
1 WWI Victory Medal in its ORIGINAL BOX WITH PAPER STATING THE CONTENTS:  This Victory Medal has the Meuse-Argonne  and St. Mihiel battle clasps as is stated on the paperwork inside.  NUMBERED:  352119
    1 Garrison Cap size 7 1/2
3 (three) WWI military portraits of Fred Hanson in uniform.
Two are identical photos, and he is wearing a Garrison Cap (it may be possible it is the same Garrison Cap that is included in this lot).  One of the photos is mounted on a matte.  Handwriting on the back of photo says, "Uncle Fred Hanson 1918 World War I".   The second photo is identical, but not mounted and appears to have been eaten by a bug on the top left and bottom right corners
The third photo is in a trifold matte with the U.S. Army and other symbols for AEF.  On the inside, he is wearing the standard "Doughboy" smokey bear hat.
    These three photos all measure 5" x 3 1/2" and the mattes measure 6 7/8" x 4 3/4"
1 (one) RPPC (Real Photograph Post Card) of Fred in Uniform, likely taken while in France during WWI.  Measures 3" x 5 1/2"
1 (one) matted bifold photograph of a school portrait date 1914, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota
    1 field mirror.  Measures 4 3/4" x ~ 3 1/3".  Circa unknown.  Manufacturer unknown
    Son's items:  circa 1950 or 1951?
2 (two) 7th Armored Division patches with green border
2 (two) 40th Infantry Division patches
4 (four) E-6 Staff Sergeant khaki uniform cloth stripes
2 (two) E-6 Staff Sergeant black/green uniform cloth stripes
2 (two) bundles of brown uniform shoe laces
1 (one) solid brass belt buckle
1 (one) Brass "U.S." collar insignia for enlisted
1 (one) Brass Infantry collar insignia for enlisted
1 (one) set of dog tags for Fred Hanson.  Included, as found, on the dog tag chain is a can opener and a small round token of some kind possibly from Korea.  The token has a hole in the center and has Asian lettering on both sides, either Korean or Japanese.  This all makes sense because at one point he was part of the 224th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 40th Division that went to Japan in 1950 and then transferred to Korea in 1951.
1 (one) M3 A1 combo tool for an M-1 Garand Rifle
1 (one) spool of thread, likely to match the khaki rank patches
1 (one) green pouch with some misc. wooden and metal tools and an eraser for unknown purpose
1 (one) sewing kit with needles
1 (one) muslin? paper wrapped button kit
1 (one) muslin? paper wrapped rifle cleaning set of patches
1 portrait canvas painting of Fred Hanson (the son?) in color with Army uniform displaying the rank, insignia and patches that are aforementioned and included in this auction.  Painting is framed.  Painting measurements are:  11 1/2" x 15 1/2".  Total frame measurements are:  14" x 18"
1 (one) DUI crest of the 67th Coastal Artillery (AA)
1 (one) DUI crest of the 224th Infantry Regiment of the 40th Division.  On September 1, 1950, the 40th Infantry Division became part of the active army from the National Guard, after training, the division was transported to Japan in March, 1951.  On January 7th, 1952, the division relieved the 24th Inf.
