A superb and rare photo of
J.R. Clark
on the
Matchless 500cc G45
during the
500cc Ulster Grand Prix of 1955.
It is a great image of both Clark and the mighty Matchless G
45 in
full action. Clark was a new member in the AJS and Matchless factory racing team in 1955, after he did magnificent in the Isle of Man TT races in 1954, finishing 6
th
in the IOM Junior TT. In 1953 he finished 11
th
in the 350cc Junior IOM T.T.

In 1953 the Matchless G45 was introduced. The bore and stroke was 66 x
72 mm
(2,60 x
2,83”
) and it delivered a power output of 48 bhp at 7,200 r.p.m. The G45 immediately was seen as a big racing promise. No less then 14 bikes were entered for the 1953 Senior T.T. on the isle of
Man.
Amongst them some big names like Phil Heath, Arthur Wheeler and Bob McIntrye. Ultimately the first three G45’s would finish in 9th, 14th and 24th place, after all the big names on the G45’s either crashed or retired.
