Description

A superb and rare photo, made from what we believe is the original negative.
Shown is the last pre-war racing machine made by
Moto Guzzi
, the remarkable
500cc d.o.h.c. supercharged Tre Cilindri
from
1940.
This extraordinary Grand Prix racer was designed by
Carlo Guzzi
in 1939. It was of very modern design, the chassis was very innovative as was the engine with its extensive use of electron and hydronalium. The engine was a double overhead camshaft 500cc three cylinder, and was fitted with a
supercharger
. Bore and stroke of the three-in-line was 59x60mm. The engine’s power output was 65 hp at 8,000 rpm. It weighed 386 pounds (175 kg) and could reach a top speed of 144 mph (230 km/h).
This exiting machine was introduced to the racing public in 1940 and only rode
1 race
, at the Lido di Albaro circuit near the Italian city of
Genova
, with Guglielmo Sandri as the rider. The World War II spoiled further use of this potential winner. After WWII there was a ban on compressor racers, so it was never raced again…
It is a very RARE
photo!
