    Description

This auction is for an original label that shows a soldier and a sailor and says "Salute and Ride". I checked online and found a Popular Mechanics article from 1918 with the headline "Salute and Ride Labels on cars aid soldiers". Owners of cars who put this label signal that they will pick up and men in uniform who salute. That way they can help the soldier or sailor to go a few blocks or a few miles. I also found an article from Texas from 1918 mentioning these type of stickers mentioned in the Kansas City Star, so it is possible that several cities printed similar stickers / labels to encourage the home front to assist giving rides to soldiers and sailors. The label measures approx. 4-3/4" x 7-1/4" and is thin paper. The front is shiny, like it might be gummed, like an old stamp, so it may have been able to stick this to your car window from the inside. (But I do not want to wet it to find out) Near the foot of the soldier is the artist's signature "Levine". This 102 year-olds label is in good condition - it has a 7-1/4" horizontal crease from being folded in half at some point - there is a 3" diagonal crease in the upper left that goes to the middle side and at that point has a 3/4" tear to the edge - there are several smaller creases - there is a 1/4" split/tear along the upper left edge - there are a couple small nicks / marks. A HARD-TO-FIND PIECE OF WORLD WAR I / HOME FRONT EPHEMERA WHICH WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED! First class postage is .50.
