    This World War I era stud-back lapel pin (or button) has a very three-dimensional design with an image of a Naval ship, the abbreviation
    U. S.
    , and the words
    SHIPYARD VOLUNTEER
    .
    As a 'stud-back' item, there is a fixed post with a large 'button' to insert through a button hole.
    The mark of the manufacturer (Whitehead & Hoag; Newark, NJ) is on the attachment 'button,' and there is a Union mark on the rear of the item.  This item
    measures approximately 32 x 21 mm (1-1/4 x 13/16"), and the rear 'button' is approximately 13 mm in diameter.  The composition appears to be bronze.
    This lapel pin is in very fine condition, with very light actual wear, light signs of handling, and toning, and it remains bright.
